Walk the Hagastraat in Schiedam today and there's nothing to tell you a motorcycle works once stood there. No plaque, no preserved facade. But for a stretch of the twentieth century, this small Dutch town wedged between Rotterdam and the Nieuwe Maas was home to a family firm that drew its own steel tubing, built its own frames, and eventually put a small two-stroke motorcycle on the road that carried its name. That firm was Hulsmann, and its story is a quintessentially Dutch one: careful engineering, modest ambition, and a slow fade rather than a dramatic collapse.
Origins in Bicycles
The company traces back to 1902, when J.D. Hulsmann established what would become Rijwiel- en Motorenfabriek J.D. Hulsmann — the Bicycle and Engine Factory — in Schiedam. Bicycle production began in 1904, and for a decade the firm built its reputation the way most Dutch cycle makers did: steadily, on durability rather than flash. What set Hulsmann apart, even in these early bicycle years, was J.D. Hulsmann's own instinct for self-sufficiency. Around 1914 and 1915, rather than buy in tubing like many contemporaries, the factory began experimenting with drawing its own steel tubes. The experiment worked, and from that point on, every frame tube that left the Hulsmann works had been drawn in-house. It was a small technical decision that said a great deal about how the company would operate for the rest of its life — building as much as it reasonably could under its own roof, engine aside.
The First Motorcycles
Hulsmann did not rush into motorized transport. It wasn't until December 1939 that the firm presented its first true motorcycle, powered by a 125cc Villiers 9D two-stroke engine. The timing was shaped by Dutch tax policy: a 1935 exemption for motorcycles under sixty kilograms had created a lively market for lightweights, and by the time Hulsmann arrived, Batavus, Eysink, Simplex, and Sparta were already well established in that space. Hulsmann's answer was a 125cc double-port machine putting out around 4 horsepower, with three speeds, a 30-watt lighting coil built into the flywheel magneto, an adjustable front fork, a Drilastic seat, 24 x 2½ inch tires, and an eight-liter tank. It was a sensible, well-specified machine for the class, arriving just as war was about to make sensible plans irrelevant.
The German occupation brought motorcycle production to a halt almost as soon as it had started. The "Under Sixty" tax regulation that had shaped the light motorcycle market was rescinded and replaced by the occupying administration, and Hulsmann shelved motorcycle manufacturing for the duration, keeping the bicycle line going instead. Development, though, didn't fully stop. It was during this period that Hulsmann worked out one of its more distinctive pieces of engineering: a frame in which part of the rear structure doubled as the exhaust routing. It's a detail that says something about the company's engineering culture — resourceful, a little unusual, and always looking to fold two jobs into one component.
The Post-War Years
When Hulsmann returned to motorcycle production in 1950, it did so with a modern Villiers 10D engine, and the years that followed, running roughly to 1954, are generally reckoned the marque's best. In 1951 the range gained a "luxury" variant fitted with a crash bar and chain guard — small comforts, but ones that mattered to buyers moving up from a bare-bones utility bike. By 1953 Hulsmann had stepped up in displacement with a model built around the Villiers 200cc 6E engine, giving the range some genuine touring capability rather than pure commuter duty.
The front suspension on the early post-war machines is worth dwelling on, because it shows Hulsmann trying something genuinely different rather than simply copying the telescopic fork designs everyone else was running. Instead of legs that slid through tubes, Hulsmann's early telescopic forks rolled, with each leg riding on four ball bearings, an arrangement meant to cut down on the wear that plagued conventional sliding guideways. It was a clever idea on paper. In practice, the ball-bearing forks proved inadequate over time, and Hulsmann switched to more conventional telescopic forks using steel springs and sliding bushes — a quiet admission that sometimes the established solution exists for a reason.
The high-water mark of Hulsmann engineering came in 1954, with a prototype built around a 225cc Villiers engine, Earles-style front forks, and a swinging-arm rear end. On paper this was a genuinely modern chassis for a small Dutch manufacturer to be developing in the mid-1950s, and it suggests a company still pushing forward technically even as its commercial footing was starting to erode. The prototype never reached production. Within a year, the entire project — and the factory behind it — would be gone.
No Racing Program
Unlike many European lightweight manufacturers of the era, Hulsmann does not appear to have run any kind of competition program. There's no record of factory race entries, no notable riders associated with the marque, and no trials or endurance history to speak of. Hulsmann's business was the practical end of the market — commuting and utility riding on 125cc and later 200cc machines — and the company seems to have been content to let its engineering do the talking in showrooms rather than on a track. For a marque otherwise willing to experiment with frame design and suspension, the absence of any racing ambition is notable, and it tells you something about how Hulsmann saw its own customers: practical people who wanted a well-built, tax-efficient bicycle-with-an-engine, not a competition mount.
Beyond Its Own Badge
Hulsmann's frame-building expertise found a second life outside its own model range. The company built frames for Berini, and the well-known Berini "egg" engine unit was fitted to Hulsmann-built frames and sold as the Berini M13. It's a detail easily overlooked, but it underlines that Hulsmann's real strength wasn't the Villiers engines it bought in — it was the frame and chassis work it had been refining since it started drawing its own tubing decades earlier. Other manufacturers recognized that capability enough to buy it.
The Great Silence and Closure
The end came quickly and for reasons entirely outside Hulsmann's control. Dutch motorcycle manufacturers as a group hit a wall in the mid-1950s, a period sometimes referred to as "the Great Silence," as cheaper foreign competition — much of it German and increasingly Japanese imports and mopeds — undercut the small national manufacturers who had spent decades building lightweight machines around British engines. Hulsmann, for all its engineering resourcefulness, had no answer to that kind of price pressure. In 1955 the Schiedam factory closed. There was no buyout, no merger, no attempt at a badge-engineered relaunch under new ownership. Hulsmann had been a single-family concern from 1902 to its final year, run by J.D. Hulsmann and never absorbed into a larger group, and when it closed, it simply stopped — the sort of quiet ending common to so many small Dutch marques of the period, rather than a dramatic bankruptcy or scandal.
Where Hulsmann Stands Today
Hulsmann has never been revived, and as of 2026 the marque remains exactly what it became in 1955: a closed chapter. What survives is interest rather than industry. Examples turn up occasionally at Dutch and German autojumbles, and for most models engine spares — largely Villiers parts, given the shared British engine base across so many Dutch lightweights of the era — can still be sourced without too much trouble. The collector base is small but genuinely dedicated, concentrated mostly in the Netherlands, where the fansite hulsmannmotor.nl keeps a detailed technical archive and parts documentation alive for owners and restorers. Hulsmann is properly described as a Schiedam cycle maker, and while that town sits within the wider Rotterdam metropolitan area, the factory itself was always on the Hagastraat in Schiedam, not Rotterdam proper — a distinction that matters to anyone tracing the marque's actual roots.
What Hulsmann leaves behind isn't a famous name or a string of race wins — it never sought either. It's a small, well-engineered example of Dutch industrial self-reliance: a company that drew its own tubes, built its own frames, tried a genuinely unusual front fork design, and was still developing swinging-arm prototypes right up until the market it depended on disappeared beneath it. For serious students of Dutch motorcycling, that's more than enough reason to remember the name.
