The sound that started with a spring problem
Every Ducati twin that snarls past you at redline owes its bark to a problem one engineer decided a coil spring simply could not solve. At high revs, conventional valve springs float. They lose control of the valve, limit how fast an engine can safely turn, and cap how much power you can pull from a given displacement. Fabio Taglioni's answer was to get rid of the spring altogether and close the valve mechanically, the same way he opened it.
That single decision, first raced in 1955, became the mechanical signature of Ducati. Six decades later it still defines several current models. This is the story of the man behind it: where he trained, how he ended up in Bologna, and why the desmodromic system and the 90-degree L-twin still shape what a Ducati is.

Early life and training
Fabio Taglioni was born on 10 September 1920 in San Lorenzo di Lugo, a small town in the Emilia-Romagna countryside. He graduated in mechanical engineering in 1943, in the middle of the war, which was not exactly an easy time to be finishing an engineering degree in Italy.
After the war he went to work for the Ceccato motorcycle company, returning home in 1949, and then joined Mondial in 1950 under technical director Alfonso Drusiani. Mondial was a serious proving ground. It gave Taglioni four years of hands-on experience with small-capacity racing engines before Ducati came calling in 1954, an apprenticeship that shows in almost everything he built afterward. Joining Ducati in 1954
Ducati manager Giuseppe Montano hired Taglioni in 1954, and the results were almost immediate. Within just 40 days of joining the company, Taglioni had created the Gran Sport 100, nicknamed 'Marianna': a 100cc single-cylinder four-stroke with a bevel-gear-driven overhead cam.
Marianna went on to win the Motogiro d'Italia in 1955, a long-distance road race that mattered enormously to Italian manufacturers at the time. The desmo breakthrough
Taglioni's defining idea arrived fast. In 1955, only a year after joining Ducati, he implemented the desmodromic valve design in the Ducati 125. Rather than relying on a spring to snap the valve shut, the desmodromic system uses a second set of rocker arms to close the valve mechanically, just as another set of rockers opens it.
The advantage is control. Without a spring to fight against at high rpm, the valve does exactly what the cam tells it to do, no more and no less. That let Ducati's race engines rev harder and more reliably than rivals relying on conventional valve springs, and it gave the marque a mechanical fingerprint that no other manufacturer really replicated at scale.
It's worth being precise about the history here: some sources cite 1956 for the first desmo racing engine, but the weight of evidence points to the 125 Desmo debuting in 1955. The Gran Sport 100 street and long-distance race bike and the pure racing 125 Desmo are related machines from the same period, but they are distinct models, and it's an easy pair to conflate.
The L-twin and the 750 Super Sport
Taglioni's other lasting contribution came fifteen years later, and it solved a different problem: how to build a bigger, torquier engine without losing the character of the singles Ducati was known for. His solution, elegant in its simplicity, was to marry two of Ducati's existing 350cc bevel-drive single-cylinder engines at a 90-degree angle.
The first drawings for the new 750cc L-twin were done in March 1970. The engine was running by July, a complete prototype existed by August, and in November 1970 Ducati unveiled the first production version, the 750 GT. The 90-degree angle wasn't just an engineering flourish. It gave the engine near-perfect primary balance and became, visually and mechanically, the layout every subsequent Ducati twin has followed.
The engine's racing pedigree arrived quickly. In 1972 the desmodromic 750 Imola made its debut at the Imola 200 in front of 85,000 spectators, with Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari crossing the finish line first and second. A year earlier, in 1971, Ducati had marked its return to Grand Prix racing with five 500cc V-twins built for the Italian championship and international GP events. That racing success fed straight into the road bike that many consider Taglioni's masterpiece, the Ducati 750 SS, a machine that still commands serious money at auction today.
A career that never really stopped
Taglioni didn't stop at the desmo twin and the 750 SS. In the 1960s he brought the Ducati Scrambler to market, a simple, likeable machine that has outlived plenty of more complicated designs. Later, his Pantah 500 helped carry Ducati through the difficult transition into the 1980s, and the 750 F1 superbike capped off his career as chief designer.
Over roughly thirty years at Ducati, from 1954 until his official retirement in 1989, Taglioni is credited with authoring more than a thousand projects. That figure includes the desmodromic system and the L-twin engine, but also the trellis frame, a structural approach still used on current Ducati models.
Even after retiring in 1989 he stayed close to the company, remaining involved with Ducati until his death on 18 July 2001. One of the most memorable moments to come out of his desmo twin's long racing life happened in 1978, when Mike Hailwood returned to the Isle of Man TT after years away and won on a Ducati, a result that still gets talked about wherever old racers gather.
His legacy across every modern Ducati
Walk into a Ducati showroom today and Taglioni's fingerprints are still on the metal. The desmodromic valve system he raced in 1955 continues to appear in several current Ducati engines, and the 90-degree L-twin layout he first sketched in March 1970 remains the mechanical basis for the marque's identity, even as the company has added V4 architecture to its lineup.
That's a rare thing in an industry that moves on quickly. Most engineers leave a model or two behind them.
